The Spoken Word

The Spoken Word

You’ve probably heard all the references to how much power our human tongue has. For such a small part of our body it can wield enormous damage. Gossiping, anger, lies. You get the picture.

Scripture emphasizes controlling the tongue to avoid ruin, downfall, or harm.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Prov 18:21

“Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.”  Prov 21:23
An accurate description of the power and damage the tongue can do is found in James Chapter 3…  and summed up as “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”

Ouch!

I think we can agree, it’s in our best interest to control what comes out of our mouths at all times! So, let’s take that a little further.

In the first chapter of Genesis, we read how God SPOKE creation into existence. That is powerful!

The topic seeing the power behind our spoken words came up at a recent family Bible study.

My grandson made the observation that words, spoken aloud, have power. If you speak negatively about yourself, or a situation, you have given power to that spirit of negativity. Conversely, the opposite is true, positive words have the power to uplift, to encourage. To save. We have the ability to speak aloud in prayer to God, to make our requests known, or to intercede on someone’s behalf.

Today, I saw this post written by Laurie MarksVincent, and it resonated deeply, especially after what my grandson had said.

“Darkness does not fear your thoughts. It fears your agreement with truth spoken aloud.

When you say, “My house belongs to the LORD,” you are not stating a wish. You are establishing a boundary.

When you say, “No weapon formed against my family will prosper,”  you are not being poetic. You are reinforcing a verdict that heaven has already rendered.

When you say, “I am covered by the blood of Jesus,” you are not repeating a phrase. You are reminding the unseen realm of a finished work that cannot be reversed.

Many believers pray, but hesitate to declare. They ask, but do not stand. They hope, but do not enforce. Yet scripture says, “You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you.” (Job 22:28 NASB)

Declaration is not arrogance. It is agreement.

Your words create a realm that either reinforces fear or reinforces faith. Do not let your mouth narrate defeat when God has already spoken victory.

The breakthrough does not begin with more effort, but with more alignment. Open your lips and speak what God has said, even when nothing around you confirms it yet.

Because faith does not wait for evidence. Faith gives evidence a voice before it appears.

Your declaration is not noise when it aligns with God’s will. He has already spoken. Now He invites you to agree.     (Laurie Marks Vincent  Feb 2026 – Facebook)

I know of many who struggle with doubt, poor self-esteem, who lack confidence, or feel defeated before they even start. I’ve had my own fair share, as well. But now that I’m more aware of how I’ve misled myself into negative thinking, it’s time to turn it around and begin speaking with the confidence that God gives me.

If you believe we have been created in His image, then believe we carry some of His creative power and authority with our own words.  Don’t let the enemy’s diet of negative whisperings become your daily nourishment. Turn to God’s word, remember He created YOU, and He has given you the ability to speak positive encouragement into your own life.

Which would you choose? What will you speak aloud about yourself in this moment?

“I am fearfully and wonderfully made. God is with me, who can be against me?  I will hold fast to what is good. My Saviour will never forsake me and gives His angels charge around me.”

I pray you go deeper into this subject and test for yourself God’s promises.

Grace be with you and all who follow our LORD.
In His name, with love
Liz
